Question

My organic chemistry teacher asked " How helpful did you find the “farmer with goat, grass and lion” analogy in making synthetic strategies? What was the farmer’s strategy to transport his belonging safely?"

the puzzel:

A man is walking down the village road with a tiger, a goat and a bundle of grass. Soon he arrives at the river bank where there is one tiny boat that can carry him and another animal or grass at a time. Here is the problem: Left alone, the tiger will eat the goat. And similarly, the goat will eat the grass bundle. How is he going to take all three across the river safely?

Solution:

Man takes goat with him to the other side first and comes back to get the tiger. He leaves tiger on the other side and brings goat back. Then he takes the bundle of grass to the other side. He returns again to pick up goat and after crossing the river, resumes his journey with tiger, goat and a bundle of grass.

Explanation / Answer

1st trip; Leave the Tiger and the grass on one side of the river and take the goat to the other side.

2nd trip; Go back to the other side
3rd trip ;Take the tiger over to the other side and pick the goat back up
4th trip; Take the goat back over to the other side

5th trip; leave the goat and take the grass over to the tiger

Then go back to the other side (6th trip) to get the goat

7th trip ;take the goat back to the other side
