Question

The usual dosage for the average adult to relieve a headache is 2 tablets of aspirin. The active ingredient in aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. However, the aspirin tablets do not contain 100% acetylsalicylic acid. Because acetylsalicylic acid is expensive, the pharmaceutical company puts in "just enough" acetylsalicylic acid in the tablets to relieve the headache and then adds a cheaper "filler" to construct the tablet. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the percent acetylsalicylic acid in a dosage of commercial aspirin. You will do this by constructing a Beer's Law plot using 5 solutions of known (Reagent) aspirin concentration and then interpolating the concentration of an unknown (Commercial) aspirin solution. PRELAB ASSIGNMENT 1. Which three solutions will be used to prepare your Reagent aspirin solutions? 2. What is the dilution equation? 3. What will be plotted on the x and y axes in your Beer's law graph? 4. Which piece of glassware will you prepare your solutions?

Explanation / Answer

Three solutions:

a) salicylic acid (b) acetic anhydride (c) phosphoric acid

Salicylic acid reacted with excess of acetic anhydride and a small amount of strong acid which is phosphoric acid will be used as a catalyst .

2) what is dilution equation:

M1 V1 = M2 V2 this equation use as a dilution equation

Where as, M stands for molarity and V stands for volume/ concentration

M1 is for initial molarity

M2 is for final molarity

V1 is initial concentration

V2 is final concentration

3) Beer's law graph can be plotted by %salicylic acid on x axis verses absorbance on y axis.

4) In erlenmeyer flask will prepare solutions.
