Chem 126 Chem 126 Exam 3, 16 April 2018 19. A galvanic cell consists of one half-cell that contains Agls) contains Cu(s) and Cu?(aq). Ag'laq)/Agls) is anode and, E 1.1V Ag(aq)/Ag(s) is cathode and, 0.46V Ox i Poe (ell Caracola - AnoExplanation / Answer
The one with the highest Eo value is better oxidizing agent (i.e it gets reduced) and acts as cathode(it accept the electrons and oxidation state reduces)
So from the above given information, Ag+ has the highest E0 and acts as cathode. and Cu2+(aq)/Cu(s) acts as anode.
Now at cathode:
Ag+ + e- --------> Ag E0 = +0.80 V
At anode:
Cu -----> Cu2+ + 2e- E0 = + 0.34 V
Eocell= E0Cathode - E0anode = +0.80V - (+0.34 V) = 0.46 V
Option b is the right answer
