Question

9. Solve each of the following electrolysis problems: a. What mass of copper metal will be formed when a solution if CuCl2 is electrolyzed for 1.2 hr at a current of 2.74 A? b. What mass of aluminum metal will be formed when a solution if AI:SO), is electrolyzed for 37.8 min at a current of 0.920 A? c. How long m ust a solution of NaCl be electrolyzed with a current of 1.04 A to obtain 12.0 g of chlorine gas? hat is the average current used to obtain 3.84 g of Ni from a solution of Ni(NO) that is electrolyzed for 1.00 hr.

Explanation / Answer

From the Faraday law of electrolysis we know that

W= EIt/96500

A) Equivalent weight of copper E=(molecular weight / charge)

=(63.546/2)

Now putting all values in equation

1.2 hours = 1.2×60×60 sec

Mass of copper metal W= (EIt/96500)

= (63.546×2.74×1.2×60×60)÷(2×96500)

= 3.894g

B) Equivalent weight of Aluminium in Al2(SO4)3= 27/3

Now mass of Aluminium = (27×.920×37.8×60)÷(3×96500)

= .194g

C) Equivalent weight of Cl in NaCl = 35.5

Now W= (EIt/96500)

12=(35.5×1.04×t)÷96500

t= 31365.11 sec

t= 8.71 hours

D) equivalent weight of nickel = 58.7/2

W= EIt/96500

3.84=(58.7×I×1×60×60)÷(2×96500)

I= 3.5 A

In every question time is in seconds

1 hour = 1×60×60 sec

And mass is in grams

Current is in amperes
