For individual solutions of the cations Ag^+ Ba^2+, Mg^2+, and Cu^2+, the following experimental observations were collected: identify a reagent that distinguishes the chemical properties of Ag^+ and Mg^2+. What observation? identify a reagent that distinguishes the chemical properties of HC1 and H_2SO_4. What observation? is the distinguishing is the distinguishing observation? identify a reagent that distinguishes the chemical properties of Ba^2+ and Cu^2+. What is the distinguishing observation identify a reagent that distinguishes the chemical properties of Cu^2+ and Mg^2+. What is the distinguishing observation?Explanation / Answer
a)
Ag+ when added with Cl- ions (from Hcl), will precipitate white as AgCl
for Mg, when added with NH3, expect Mg(OH)2 formation as precipitate (white)
b)
Addition of Ba+2 ions, will form BaSO4 in solid precipitate, and Hcl will NOT react
Addition of Ag+ will react with HCl only, to form Agcl
c)
Addition of H2SO4 acid precipitate Ba+2 ions... and not Cu+2
d)
You will require filtration and separation processes, since the precipitates will be present (both of them) but the colors are totally different.
Also, if on ly one ion is present, you will be able to mark possitive tests easily
