Question

How do the following influence the percent yield? Will the percent yield be too large, too small, or no effect? a.) You add NaOH into Cu(NO3)2 to create a precipitate. What will happen if too much of NaOH was added when Cu(NO3)2 was precipitated? b.) You added too much CH3COOH to CuO (solution mixture)? c.) The filterate is blue in color by the product of dissolving CuO. The filter was slightly blue after the CuO was filtered on to filter paper? d.) Not enough magnesium was added to remove all the blue color in the solution? e.) The filter paper was still damp when you wieghed the paper and residue?

Explanation / Answer

(a) No effect on percent yield. Excess NaOH will remain in solution.

(b) no effect . Excess acetic acid will remain in solution

(c) If the filter paper is blue, it means it still contain some Cu ^2+. Thus % yield will be less.

(d) % yield will be less. As Mg will not be able to reduce Cu^2+ completely and as a result recovered Cu will be less and % yield will be less.

(e) % yield will be more and the measured amount will contain some water.
