Question
You may need to review stoichiometry and limiting reagent concepts in your textbook to complete this prelab and prepare for the quiz. What is the difference between a simple ion and a complex ion? Give an example (not listed in this experiment) of each. What do we typically call the portion of a synthetic reaction in which we are focused on isolating the pure compound from the reaction mixture? What determines the theoretical yield of any reaction? In the reaction: A + 2B rightarrow 3C + D If 93 g of and 85 g of B arc combined, which reactant is the limiting reagent, and what is the theoretical yield of C in grains? (MM(A) = 55 g/mole. MM(B) = 48 g/molc. MM(C) = 37 g/mol)Explanation / Answer
Q1
simple ion --> an ion composed of just ONE atom
complex ion --> an ion composed of plenty aotms/molecule which is charged
example:
simple --> Li+, Cl-, etc...
complex --> NO3-, PO4-3
Q3
theoretical yield --> the sstoichiometric amounts calcualted based on the limiting reactant, that is, the reactant that will be consumed first
Q4.
calculate moles of all
mol A = mass/MW = 93/55 = 1.690
mol of B = mass/MW = 85/48 = 1.770
ratio is 1:2
so... clearly B is limiting
so
mol of B 1.770 --> 1.770/2 = 0.885 mol of A required
so...
B is limiting and theoretical yield of C:
0.885 mol of A --> 3*0.885 = 2.655 mol of C
mass = mol*MW = 2.655*37 = 98.235 g of C
