Question

Please provide an explaination!

The ideal gas law describes the relationship among the pressure P, volume V, number of moles n, and absolute temperature T of an ideal gas. Here is the relationship expressed mathematically: PV = nRT where R is a proportionality constant. The units of R are determined by the units of pressure and volume used in the equation. When atm is used for pressure and L for volume, the appropriate R value is 0.0821 L middot atm/mol middot K. How many air molecules are in a 12.2 times 12.0 times 10.0 ft room? Assume atmospheric pressure of 1.00 atm, a room temperature of 20.0 degree C, and ideal behavior. Volume conversion:There are 28.2 liters in one cubic foot.

Explanation / Answer

1ft = 0.3048 m

volume of room = 12.5 x 12 x 10 = 1500 ft3

     = ( 1500 ) x 28.2 liters

= 42300 liters

P = 1 atm ,   T = 20 C = 20+273 = 293 K

we use PV = nRT to get moles n ,    R is gas constant = 0.0821 liter atm/molK

1 atm x 42300 L = n x 0.0821 liter atm/molK x 293 K

n = 1758.45

Number of molecules = moles x avagadro number

       = 1758.45 x 6.023 x 10^23

     = 1.059 x 10^ 27
