Question

You and your friends are considering throwing a party, and are trying to decide between getting a half barrel keg of root beer (15.5 gallons) or buying an equivalent volume of root beer in 12 oz (355 mL) cans. Assume the keg is completely recyclable and that a 12 oz. can take 3210 kJ per can to make.

Calculate the amount of energy required to make the amount of necessary cans.

Assuming gasoline has an energy density of energy density of 125,000 BTU/gallon, calculate the equivalent number of gallons of gasoline that would be necessary to use

cans instead of a keg.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Cans required = Total V / can volume = (15.5 gall )( 3780 mL / gall) / (1 can / 355 mL) = 165.04; assume 165 cans required

b)

Energy for cans --> Ecan * total Can =(3210 kJ/can) * (165 cans) = 529650 kJ for this

c)

change energy to BTU

1 BTU = 1.055 kJ

529650 kJ --> 529650 /1.055 = 502037.91 BTU

E = 125000 BTU/gal

claculate galons:

V = Etotal/ Egal = 502037.91 BTU/ (125000BTU/gal) = 4.016 galons of gasoline required
