Question

Using the data you calculated in Part B and the results from the questions on the Balmer series, what common characteristic, in terms of the energy levels of the hydrogen atom, do all the lines in the Lyman series have. Determine longest possible wavelength for an emission line in the Lyman series. Determine the shortest possible wavelength for an emission line in the Lyman series. The Panchen series lines have the common characteristic of transitions ending in the n=3 level. If the infrared region is from 700 nm to 30,000 nm, what can be said about the wavelengths of all the lines in the Panchen series? Determine longest possible wavelength for an emission line in the Panchen series. Determine the shortest possible wavelength for an emission line in the Panchen series.

Explanation / Answer

5. The common characerstic :
Lines get closer and closer and eventually they get so closer that makes you believe,
it is continuous spectrum. This you can observe in both Balmer and Lyman series.
All these series end at a point called "Series-Limit".

6. The Lyman series is a series of lines in the ultra-violet.
1/ = RH[1/n12 - 1/n22 ]
For longest of Lyman series, energy difference in two levels showing transition
should be minimum , n2=2
1/ = 1.09678 *107 [ 1- 1/4 ]
   =1.215679 *10-7m

7) For shortest of Lyman series, energy difference in two levels showing transition
should be maximum , n2=
1/ = 1.09678*107 [1 - 1/ 2]
   = 9.117598*10-7m

8) In the electromagnetic spectrum the Infrared range is from 400-700nm
If the infra redregion is from 700nm to 30,000nm there is only one transistion
(1 emission line) at 700nm wavelength.

9)   1/ = RH[1/n12 - 1/n22 ] n1=3 n2=4
      1/ = 1.09678 *107 [1/9 - 1/16]
= 1.875620*10-6m is the longest possible wavelength in the paschen series
10)  1/ = RH[1/n12 - 1/n22 ] n1=3 n2 =
  1/ = 1.09678 *107 [1/9 - 1/ 2]
= 8.2041*10-7m is the shortest wavelength in paschen series
