Question

The empirical formula of the synthesized coordination compound will be determined. In this experiment, the percent nickel ion will be determined through spectroscopy. Write a paragraph describing an experiment to check the assumption that the absorbance values vary linearly with concentration of nickel ion. A student did not rinse the volumetric flask out after preparing the standard nickel ion solution. The student used the same volumetric flask to prepare the solution of the unknown nickel ion. How will the results be affected?

Explanation / Answer

1) In the lab, prepare standards of a known concentration, and plot a calibration graph.
This you will get by observing absorbance spectrum. Absorbance spectrum
can be obtained by analyzing solution containing unknown concentration of nickel ions
   in Spectrophotometer.
You will then use that graph to figure out the concentration of an unknown sample.
In this experiment you are using a calibration graph to relate absorbance and
concentration. So, you should plot absorbance vs. concentration.
Absorbtion equation used to relate with concentration is Beer-Lambert law,
A = lc where A is absorbance, is the molar absorptivity constant
l is the path length and c is the concentration

2) The previously used known concentration of nickel ion solution may interfere
with the unknown concentration of nickel ion causing a change in the
concentration of the unknown nickel ion solution. Therefore, if you
don't rinse volumetric flask the end result which is the concentration
of the unknown nickel ion will be wrong.
