Question

In the apparatus developed at NJIT, for the determination of thermal contact resistance (TCR) and thermal conductivity, the total thermal resistance, R_t, at the plastic-metal interface is related to the contact resistance, R_c, as R_t = t/k_p + 2R_c, where t is specimen thickness, and k_p its thermal conductivity. Figure 1 shows a plot of total thermal resistance for ABS at a mean temperature of 95 degree C. From the Figure, determine (a) the thermal conductivity and (b) the thermal contact resistance for the ABS sample (Note: The best-fit straight line through the data points does not pass through the origin (0, 0)).

Explanation / Answer

the straight line when extended meets the y axis at 0.00025

2RC=0.00025

RC =0.00025/2= 0.000125

slope =1/Kp = (0.004-0.002)/ (0.0007-0.0003) =5

Kp =1/5=0.2
