Question
The introduction of autonomous vehicles to society, as a product designed with targeting algorithms, raises ethical worries that go beyond just specific of these algorithms. Though the detail autonomous vehicles are rightfully expected to maximize overall good in the long run, they will be designed to purposefully target unsuspecting victims, whenever that is the optimal outcome of a imminent accident. But the very existence of these targeting algorithms, of whatever kind, seems highly questionable to many critics. Using at least two of the morally-relevant factors, (a) explain some of the ethical problems that autonomous vehicles (with targeting algorithms) introduce to society, and (b) either defend or criticize the introduction of this new kind of technology.Explanation / Answer
The ethical problem that autonomous vehicles introduce to society is the voluntary decision to hit the target in case of emergency or a systematic and deliberate discrimination. In the case of emergency the autonomous vehicle would choose a target which would be able to handle the impact better in case of collision. This seems a bit unfair,
because the owners of those targeted vehicles would bear this burden without the fault of their own, other than they care about the safety of their family or they need a SUV to transport a large family.
In the name of crash optimatization, if the car gets to decide between two motorcyclist; one who is waering a helmet and one who is not , then the car would hit into the motorcyclist who is wearing a helmet. And by deliberately hitting the motorcyclist we are penalizing him or her for being responsible for wearing a helmet. Meanwhile we are giving other motorcyclist a free pass even though that person is less responsible, this may encourage some to not wear a helmet , in order to stand out as a favoured target, like wise in the case of bigger cars their security is compromised just because of this algorithm, and surely this type of targeted algorithm is wrong because it is deliberately bias and this should be rectified and without this rectification this new kind of technology should not be introduced.
