Question
Hello guys,
So we recently did a lab where we were to l gain further experience with titrations by observing reactions with hydrochloric acid and commerical antacids, calculate the amount of acid neutralized by commerical antacids, and tabulate and compare results to determine most cost-effective antacid. Here are some questions from the post lab that I got stuck on, all of them should be fairly easy to complete and should not take that long, PLEASE COMPLETE ALL FOR HIGH RATING.
**NOTES TO HELP YOU ANSWER SOME OF THESE**
For the first Q1 here is the spreadsheet of four antacids with their price and etc just tell me which one is most cost effective and why here:
For the dye question basically we used a dye as an indicator to determine if a reaction has occured, the dye was called bromothymol.
And that should be it guys, again please answer all and I will give you awesome credit and a shoutout THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Explanation / Answer
The most cost effective antacid is tums.
a. Calcium carbonate has Ca2+ which reacts with 2 moles of acid and thus neutralized acid much faster and is most effective in chronic heartburn condition.
b. Marble contains CaCO3 which reacts with acid formed in acid rain and thus gets washed away easily or dissolve easily over time.
CaCO3 + H2SO4 --> CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O
Indicator help identify the end point of titration by a color change. If we are using a indicator which gives pink color when in basic medium and colorless when in acidic medium. The original color of solution would be pink, after addition of acid to it, the color shifts to colorless.
A slow addition of titrant is advised so as to not miss the exact end point of titration.
Carbonate functions as buffer. When in titration we add small amount of acid, the buffer formed does not allow the pH to change much, until the end point of titration is reached. This may result in some error in measurement.
