Question

Help finding what unknown acid I have? I am writing a formal lab and am supposed to narrow down a list of acids to find my specific one. I can't figure out what calculations I am supposed to be using to find my unkown acid. Please help! My first picture is the information I'm given on my first page (the rest is just explanation on how to write the paper, which I do not need help with.)

Experimental data: Titration of a 0.366 g sample of an unknown acid was performed using 0.100 M NaOH. The data from the titration yielded the titration curve shown on the back of this sheet. (Note: This acid is NOT necessarily the same as the one you used in experiment 10.)

Explanation / Answer

we have

at equivalnece point , V of base = 60.0 ml

and Molarity of NaOH = 0.100 M

therefore

moles of acid = 0.100 mol/L x 0.06 L

= 0.006 mol

and we have mass of acid used.

and

molar mass = mass / moles

= 0.366 g / 0.006 mol

= 61.0 g/mol

therefore the correct acid can be 1) acetic acid , 2 ) H2CO3 , 3 ) Boric acid

but the given acid is a monoacidic means have only one equivalence point

therefore

the correct option is ACETIC ACID.
