Question

1. If the permanganate solution was not thoroughly acidified, what would be the effect on the yield of the product? Explain your answer. **this lab involves the preparation of 9,10-Dihydroxystearic acid from oleic acid and kmno4.
2. Linoleic acid differs from oleic acid by two hydrogens, having two double bonds instead of one. Calculate the number of grams of KOH and kmno4 needed to completely hydroxylate 7.5g of this compound.
3. Complete the reactions below (see the pic)
4. Explain the basis for recommending the use of alkyl alcohol to discharge the purple color of KMnO4 in the above procedure.

Explanation / Answer

1. If the permangnate solution was not acidified enough, the net yield of product would be very low as the reaction. The cleavage of the mangnate complex required acid for the bonds to cleave and form the diol product.

2. For linoelic acid

moles of linoleic acid = 7.5/280.44 = 0.027 mol

mass of KMnO4 required = 0.027 x 2 x 158.03/3 = 2.85 g

mass of KOH required = 2 x 0.027 x 56 = 1.01 g

3. Balaned equation,

3CH3-CH=CH-CH3 + 2KMnO4 + 4H2O --> 3CH3CH(OH)-CH(OH)CH3 + 2MnO2 + 2KOH

CH3-CH=CH-CH3 + KMnO4 + H2SO4 --> CH3CH(OH)-CH(OH)CH3 + MnSO4 + K2SO4 + H2O

4. Allyl alcohol is more eractive towards oxidatizing reagents such as KMnO4 and thus addition of allyl alcohol results in dissappearence of KMnO4 purple color.
