Question

The four states I have chosen are Hawaii, Virginia, Montana, Colorado for this particular question.

Thank You,

You work for a nonprofit environmental organization that seeks to convince United States legislators to accede to the Paris Agreement negotiated at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Your organization hopes to gain support by visiting legislators from every state and explaining to them the expected impacts of climate change for their states. You are assigned to visit key legislators in 4 different states. List the 4 states that you will visit and for each state: (1) identify 2 likely climate change impacts that are expected in the state (this can include impacts on specific cities in the state but cannot include increasing temperature and changes in precipitation, though the CC consequences" of those changes are acceptable), (2) identify the time frame over which these 2 impacts are expected to take place is this a concern now? will it be a concern in the next 50-100 years and (3) identify 2 adaptation and/or mitigation strategies, not including reductions in emission of greenhouse gases, that may be needed as a result of the two impacts you identified in part (1)

Explanation / Answer

(1) The states selected are: Hawaii, Virginia, Montana and Colorado.

(2) The changes mentioned are expected to take full form by another 50 -100 years approximately on an average in over all the 4 states described above. These changes are in its starting stages which can be turned around if steps taken now so that fiuture generation would have a chance to see these places as they shoukd be.

(3) Hawaii --- (i) Encourage the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as coral reefs, beaches and dunes, forests, streams, floodplains, and wetlands that have the inherent capacity to avoid, minimize, or mitigate the impacts of climate change. (ii) Promote sector resilience in areas such as Water, roads, airports, and public health, by encouraging the identification of climate change threats, assessment of potential consequences, and evaluation of adaptation options.

Virginia --- (i) Using drought-resistant or excess-moisture-resistant species (or varieties like drought-resistant wheat, corn, cotton, etc.) to reduce (resist) the impact from droughts and floods. (ii) Modifying crop rotations to include cover crops that help build resilience to climate change and climate variability.

Montana --- There is no mitigation or adaptation plan run out for Montana but the below 2 areas emphasizes towards action plan for climate change (i) Enhance workforce climate literacy (ii) Implement the Green Parks Plan.

Colorado --- (i) Promote and encourage drought preparedness through comprehensive drought planning mitigation implementation; incorporate climate variability and change into Colorado's Water Plan. (ii) Identifying and implementing best practices for integrating cost-effective renewable resources, both utility-scale and distributed; increase access to capital for commercial, residential, agricultural, and industrial customers seeking to improve the energy performance of their facilities.
