It is very important for you to hand the purified phenanthrene in to your get in one hour to get a good grade. Oops! You accidentally put the phenanthrene into a vial which you thought was clean, but instead had a lot of NaCl clinging to the sides. What can you do to quickly purify the phenanthrene again? Note that phenanthrene is an organic solid. Explain how a mixture of organic acid, organic base and a neutral organic acid can be purified using the following: HCI (6 M), NaOH (6 M). water, dichlomethane (CH_2Cl_2).

Answer 1 :

Phenanthrene is an organic solid thus it will dissolve in organic solvent like ethyl acetate and NaCl will dissolve in water. So First we should dissolve both solid taking water and ethyl acetate. Than we will take the substance in separating funnel and do the extraction process. Water and ethylacetate layer wont mix. Organic compound will be dissoved in organic solvent. So we will collect the organic layer and evoporate the solvent to get pure phenantrene.

Answer 2 :

First the extraction is done using dichlomethane (DCM) and water in separating funnel. DCM and water will form two separate layers. In this stage acid will be in form of anion (deprotonated) while base in the form of cation (protonated). Both acid and basic organic compounds will remain dissolved in water layer. The neutral organic compound will be dissolved in DCM . DCM is collected, by evaporating this we get pure neutral organic compound. Then acid wil be added to the mixture in separating funnel. Addition of acid makes acid uncharged (protonated thus neutral) while base protonated.Base will remain dissolved in water layer while neutral acid will dissolve in DCM. DCM is collected , evaporated. Pure acid organic compound is obtained. Now base is added to the separating funnel . Base becomes neutral and extracted by DCM. DCM collected and evaporated to get pure basic compound.
