Question

Tantalum (Ta) is a metal frequently used in electronics (e.g. tantalum capacitors). Tantalum is also highly bioinert and is used as an orthopedic implant material. In alpha-phase Ta has the cubic A2 (BCC) structure (Fig. 1) and a density of 16.7 g/cm^3. What is the length of the unit cell edge (in nm)? % Soduim Chloride (NaCl) has the cubic B1 (FCC) structure (Fig. 2, Na atom is in 0, 0, 0 position) with a lattice parameter of 0.564 nm.. It contains 4 Na and 4 Cl atoms. What are atom positions for all (4 Na and 4 Cl) atoms in the unit cell. Calculate the planar density of Cl atoms (in atoms/nm^2) for the following planes: (100) (110) (111)

Explanation / Answer

1)
density,
d = Z*M/(a^3*NA)

atomic number, Z = 74
molar mass, M = 181 g/mol
NA is Avogadro;s number
a is edge length

putting values,
d = Z*M/(a^3*NA)
16.7 = (74*181)/(a^3 * 6.022*10^23)
a^3 = 1.332*10^-21 cm^3
a = 1.1*10^-7 cm
= 1.1 nm

Answer: 1.1 nm
