Question

There is great interest in transition metal complexes containing the trifluoromethyl (CF_3)ligand. The [Pt(CF_3)_3CI]^2- complex 1, as its NBu_4^+salt, was oxidized with a stoichiometric amount of chlorine gas at - 78 degree C to give complex 2, which on the basis of its elemental analysis appeared to beta [Pt(CF_3)_3CI_3]^2-. Such a complex could beta either of the diastereomers 2a, 2b pictured below. The^19F nmr spectrum of complex 2 is reproduced below and consists of two main signals: a septet at -23.5 ppm and a quartet at - 33.4 ppm, in a 1:2 integrated ratio.

Explanation / Answer

Answer: 2a

Reason:

1. One quartet at -33.40 ppm is indicating that another CF3 is closely appearing and are in the same environment (in the same plane) (see in 2a) (6 Fluorine atoms) participating in splitting with chemically unequivalent CF3 group to give quartet. And the other CF3 giving quartet at -33.40 ppm (3 fluorine atoms) participating in splitting with chemically unequivalent 2 CF3 groups to give septet.
