Question

Can someone help me with #2 with the ion pair neglected ?

Thank you !

Consider a sa turated solution of in which the following reactions 3.2.107 H20 OHT (a) write mass and charge balances for this solution (b) Find the concentration of Sr2+ in the solution pH is fixed at 250 Systematic Treatment of equilibrium II [6] The previous problem neglected ion pair formation K- 1.6x 102 a) write the mass balance including the ion pai (b) Find the concentrations of Sr2+ and Srso4(aq) if the pH is fxed at 2 S0.what fraction of dissolved strontium is in the ion pain?

Explanation / Answer

Mass balance: [Sr2+ ] + [SrSO4] = [SO42- ] + [HSO4- ] + [SrSO4]

The net mass balance is unchanged from

[Sr2+ ] = [SO42- ] + [HSO4- ]

because [SrSO4] cancels on both sides of the equation.

================================

(b) because the mass balance and the equilibria are unchanged.

The only addition is the ion pair whose concentration is

[SrSO4] = K[Sr2+ ][SO42- ] = K[Sr2+ ] [Sr2+ ]/ 1.310 = 5.2 × 10^-5 M

Fraction in ion pair =

= [SrSO4] / [SrSO4] + [Sr2+] = 0.074
