Question

Experiment 9 5. A balloon is inflated with a gas. The pressure outside the balloon is 755 torr and the temperature of the surroundings and the balloon contents is 35 C. What is the pressure exerted by the gas inside the balloon? 6. A balloon containing 0.100 moles of He gas has a volume of 2.45 liters at 25 Cand a pressure of 760 torr. If the balloon rose into the atmosphere and its temperature changed to 15°C and its pressure decreased to 720 torr, what would the volume of the balloon be? q41 x V2. x 2.40 288 2.50 L 7. A cylinder of oxygen for medical use contains 34.5 Lof oxygen at a pressure of 149.6 atm a 25°C. (a) What is the pressure of this oxygen ifthe cylinder is stored in a warehouse with no conditioning at a temperature of 49.5oC?

Explanation / Answer

(6) We know that PV = nRT

Where

T = Temperature ;P = pressure ; n = No . of moles ;R = gas constant ; V= Volume of the gas

As the gas remains the same , n will constant

So PV / T = constant

Thereby PV/T = P'V'/T'

Where

P = initial pressure = 760 torr

V = initial volume = 2.45 L

T = initial temperature = 25 oC = 25+273 = 298 K

P'= final pressure = 720 torr

V' = final volume = ?

T' = final temperature = 15 oC = 15+273 = 288 K

Plug the values we get

V' = (PVT') / (TP')

= 2.50 L
