Question
Common Chemical Hazards and Superfund Sites" Please respond to the following: Watch the video titled “Groundwater Contamination” (4 min 35 sec) under the Water Pollution terms section of the Science Corner. You can also view the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xs1jLlbztE. Next, explain the main reasons why some groundwater sources that we use may be more vulnerable to chemical contamination than others. Next, suggest one (1) strategy that the government can take to reduce groundwater contamination. Access the Superfund Sites Website under the Super Fund terms section of the Science Corner. You can also access the site at http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/index.htm. Click on your region of the country in the map and then click on your state. Next, choose one (1) of the Superfund sites on the list and provide a brief summary of the site. Describe the community involvement (e.g., remediation strategies, current stage of cleanup at the site, etc.) in the discovery or cleanup of the site and give your opinion as to whether or not you believe the community involvement is efficient. Imagine that you recently found out you live close to a Superfund site. Identify the most important information you would want to know about the site. Give your opinion on whether you would move to a new location. Explain why or why not.
Explanation / Answer
GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION:
Unfortunately many people doesn't even know about the groundwater flowing in deeper layers of land and instead are polluting by releasing oils and chemicals into the ground water and thus by contaminating the water. Groundwater is the important source for irrigation, and also used for drinking water.
Main Reasons: a. Septic systems are the ones to look after and can be considered as the major reason for groundwater contamination. An improperly design, maintenance of septic tanks often leads to leakage of harmful bacteria and viruses into groundwater.
B. Chemicals and oil storage tanks: Chemicals include pesticides and other stuff used by farmers to fertilize plants. These chemicals slowly mix up with soil and goes into ground water. Similarly the storage tanks also do release the oil slowly and mix with groundwater making it really harmful.
1. Strategy that government can take to reduce contamination: The primary step to be taken by government is to teach and create awareness in public about groundwater importance and how to reduce groundwater contamination. wastes should be properly disposed. And also government should inspect the septic systems before the design, because once the groundwater is polluted it never be cleaned again. The people should finally know that if they dump any waste in sink or drain it seriously effect the groundwater quality.
Superfund site: Nevada , Apex landfill.. one of the top 10 worst dump site located in Las Vegas. Though the area is small but it is dumping thousands of tons of waste materials from industries. The community involvement is pretty late as the damage was already done to groundwater and though it is located outside the city limits.
Lipari landfill, New Jersey: according to studies it is confirmed that the people living around this dump site are found to have infected with many diseases and then the remediation process started and almost 100 million were estimated to clean up this landfill site. The interesting fact here is majority of the amount was paid by the industries which used to dump industrial wastes here...
I wish I could definitely like to move to new location which is probably outside the limits with less pollution, and can live peacefully BUT unfortunately I cannot move to new location because of my family..
