Question

Answer the following questions regarding the equilibrium involved in the Haber process, and explain your answers: What would happen to the equilibrium if the temperature w ere decreased from 573 K to 298K? How would a metal catalyst affect the equilibrium? What would happen to the equilibrium if the volume of the reaction vessel were to be decreased by compressing it with a piston, without removing any matter? What would happen to the equilibrium if the reaction vessel were pressurized to 300atnt with pure argon gas? What would happen to the equilibrium if the pressure of NH_3 were increased from 50atm to 100atm?

Explanation / Answer

For the given reaction,

a. If temperature is decreased from 573 K to 298 K, the reaction equilibrium would shift to the right. For an exothermic reaction, decreasing temperature would released less heat and to balance that mor reactant would form product and heat is released.

b. Catalyst would reduce the energy of activation for the given reaction and would favor the formation of products.

c. Decreasing volume, increases pressure, so reaction equilibrium would shift to lesser moles side, that is towards the products end.

d. If pressure of the system was increased with Argon, equilibrium would shift to the direction with lesser moles, products formation would be favoured.

e. If NH3 pressure is increased, equilibrium would shift to left hand side and more starting material would be formed.
