Question

Equilibrum question regarding this equation:

BaC2O4(s) + H+(aq) <--> Ba2+(aq) + HC2O4-(aq)

Reagents given: 0.1 M BaCl2, 0.1 M (NH4)2C2O4, 1 M HCl, 1 M NH3

I am tasked with using these reagents with the given equation above in order to determine:

A. Barium oxalate produced by:

B. Net Ionic Equation

C. Equilibrium shifted to the right by

D. Observation

E. Net Ionic Equation:

F. Reason for shift:

g. Equilibrium shifted to the left by:

H. Observation:

L. Net Ionic Equation

J. Reason for shift

These answers should not be that hard and not more than one line each.

Here is a sample that I completed for reference:

Explanation / Answer

a) Ba C2O4 can be obtained by adding 0.1 M Ba Cl2 and 0.1 M ammonium oxalate .

b) the overall reaction is BaCl2 +(NH4)2C2O4 ------> BaC2O4 (s) + NH4Cl

The net ionic equation is

Ba+2(aq) + C2O4-2(aq) ------->BaC2O4 (s)

c) The equilbrium given is shifted to right side by the additionof 1M HCl.

d) The shift in equilibrium is observed by the more solubity of BaC2O4 solid.

e)net ionic equation

H+(aq) + BaC2O4(s) -------> Ba+2 (aq) + HC2O4-(aq)

f) As tthe reactant concentration incresed(H+ added as HCl)according to Le-Chatlier principle , the equilibrium responds in such a way to reduce the concentration of reactant, that is rate of forward reaction increases.

g)The equilibrium is shifted to left by addition of 1M NH3

h) observation is formation of more solid barium oxalate

i) H+ (aq) + NH3(aq) ----> NH4+

j) As the reactant H+ is removed by ammonia addition, more of the products decompose to give back reactants to baalance the effect by Le-Chatlier principle.
