Question

Estimate the diffusivity, D for the system fluorotrichloro-methane-nitrogen at 100 degree C and 10 atm. Using the following semi-empirical equation and the critical temperatures and densities are given in Table D = 0.01498 T^1.81 (1/M_A + 1/M_B)^0.5/p(T_CA T_CB)^0.1405 (V_CA^0.4 + V_CB^0.4)^2 Where D = diffusivity, cm^2/s T = temperature, K M_A, M_B = molecular weight of components A and B, respectively V_CA, V_CB = critical molar volumes of A and B, cm^3/mol T_cA, T_cB = critical temperature of A and B, K

Explanation / Answer

T = 373.15 K

P = 10 atm = 760 cm

Ma = 137.36 g/mol

Mb = 28 g/mol

Tc A = 471.15 K

Tc B = 126.15 K

Vc, A = Ma / pc  =  137.36 g/mol / (0.0552 g/cm3) = 2488.41 cm3 /mol

Vc ,B = Mb / pc =  28 g/mol / 0.311  g/cm3 = 90.032 cm3/mol

Substitute all these quantities in D equation.

On solving,

Diffusivity = 4.73x10-5  cm2 /s
