Question
Some diabetics must take insulin via injections. If a diabetic does not take enough insulin, their cells begin metabolizing fatty acids. As a result of this disruption of metabolism, the molecules shown below (ketone bodies) are produced. Circle the molecules above that are likely to disrupt the blood's pH. Will the blood pH be increased or decreased and why? If ketone bodies are present, what chemical could be added to the blood to restore the blood's natural pH? Show the reaction that could occur between the chosen chemical and one of the molecules above.Explanation / Answer
(a)
CH3COCH2COOH can diturb the pH of blood. This is becuase of its ability to act as a weak acid which produce some H+ ions.
(b) As concentration of H+ ions increases, the pH of the blood will devrease. (pH = - Log[H+]
(c) A weak base can neutralise it.
2 CH3COCH2COOH + Na2CO3 ----------> 2 CH3COCH2COONa + H2O + CO2
