Question

The percentage composition of a mixture can be determined by exploiting differences between the physical properties of its components. Sand (SiO_2) is insoluble in water, ammonium chloride (NH_4Cl) sublimes and sodium chlorides (NaCl) is soluble in water. A sample of a mixture of SiO_2 (sand), NH_4Cl and NaCl was first heated to facilitate sublimation. Water was then added to the remaining sample to dissolve the NaCl and facilitate removal of the SiO_2. Use the data below to determine the percent composition of mixture. Give three(3) methods of separation that were used in this method besides sublimation etermine the accuracy of the results obtained by calculating the percent recovery, SHOW WORKINGS BELOW

Explanation / Answer

%NH4Cl= 0.25/1.97X100= 12.7%

%NaCl= 0.40/1,97X100= 20,3%

%SiO2= 1.34/1.97X100=68%

The calculation for mass of NH4Cl in the table above is incorrectly done. It should be (47.88-47.63)=0.25 g
