Question
Analysis of NO3 - in aquarium water was carried out by capillary zone electrophoresis using IO4 - as an internal standard. A standard solution of 15.0 ppm NO3 - and 10.0 ppm IO4 - gives peak heights of 95.0 units and 100.1 units, respectively. A sample of aquarium water is diluted by a factor of 100 and sufficient internal standard added to make its concentration 10.0 ppm. Analysis gives signals of 29.2 units and 105.8 untis for NO3 - and IO4, respectively. Determine the concentration of NO3 - (in ppm) in the aquarium water.
Explanation / Answer
NO3- concentratio of 15 ppm gave a signal of 95 units, so a siganl of 29.2 units means that the conc. of NO3- is :
15/95 * 29.2 = 48.8 ppm
Since this solution is produced by diluting the aquarium water 100 times, so NO3- concentartion is the aquarium water = 100*48.8 = 4880 ppm
