16. answer b: The progressive era from 1890-1920 was the time period of widespread political reforms and social activism and reforms across the United States. The progressive era started as social movement but changed into political movement. The main aim of this movement was the eliminating problems caused due to immigration, urbanisation, corruption in government, industralisation, poverty. People believed that these problems can be solved by providing good education, safe workplace. These people lived mainly in cities and were educated and they believed that government can bring this change. Jane Addams and journalists like Jaccob Riis and Ida Tarbel were important social reformers of this time.

17. answer d: Mooney was a labour leader and a political activist. He was convicted with Warren Billings for the bombings in 1916 at San Francisco preparedness day parade. About 10 people died and 40 were injured in this incident. Billing was sentenced to life imprisonment and Mooney was sentenced to hang. Mooney served 22 years in jail and after that he was pardoned in 1939. So Mooney case was related with labour issues organizing and murder.

This was caused because after the war the employers were not willing to give higher wages to the labours since the price of the commodities were rising which led to strikes by labours in hundreds from 1919-1920. For this employers led a successful strikes against the union known as American plan and blame these unions as alien to the spirit of the nation.

But in 1913, the president of US Woodrow Wilson of US signed the Raker act on december 1913 which allowed the San Franscisco to build a dam the Yosemite beautiful Hetch Hetchy valley. This created wide controversy and the opposition was led by John Muir.

In 1948, an immigrant collected thousands of eggs from the island. He was able to make enough money from them and founded a pharmacy called Pacific egg company. He returned to Sanfranscisco with a worth $3000 of Murre eggs. In 1850 a group of eggers founded the Farallon egg company and set out to aquire right to all the eggs of the Farallon.
