Question
In Lab the amount of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in a tablet of Vanquish was liquid chromatography (LC). Three standard solutions were prepared in 50-mL volumetric flasks by adding 10 mL of salicylic acid solution (750 mg/50 mL) as the internal standard (IS) with the following compounds and diluting to the mark with 50/50 methanol/water: Calculate the response factor for aspirin using the following calibration curve for aspirin produced from the LC chromatograms from the above standards. Vanquish contains acetaminophen (194 mg), aspirin (227 mg), and caffeine (33 mg) in each tablet. One Vanquish tablet weighed 674.6 mg. The tablet was ground into powder and an aliquot weighing 123.6 mg was transferred to a 50-mL flask with 10 ml. of the internal standard. The flask was diluted to the mark with 50/50 methanol/water and the resulting solution was filtered and analyzed by LC. Answer the following questions based on the resulting LC Vanquish chromatogram and integration results. Width provided is peak base width.Explanation / Answer
1. Aspirin standard solutions
The area obtained from each solution are plotted against the mass of aspirin in each sample
A straight line is obtained
the equation for the trendline fit
y = mx + c
m = slope
c = intercept
Now,
response factor = peak are/mass of aspirin
So,
from the calibration curve,
response factor = slope of the curve
= 0.007
Response factor for the given sample asirin is 0.007.
