Climate controls (altitude- latitude- ocean currents- wind patterns- land/water contrast) are important in determining the temperature and precipitation profile for any location on the surface of the earth. Use St. Louis, Missouri and Jakarta, Indonesia climographs to discuss the effects of the above temperature control patterns. (a) how do they influence climate patterns of both locations, (b) do the five controls affect each location differently? (c) are some factors more influential on the climate than others at each location.

Yes climate controls are very important in determining the temperature and precipitation profile of any location on the earth's surface.

A. Coming to St. Louis, Missouri the climate is SUBTROPICAL where as the climate in Jakarta, Indonesia is TROPICAL MONSOON. This is because Missouri is on cool temperature zone where the annual temperature is 14°C where Jakarta is tropical and humid with annual temperature of 28°C

B. The simple relation between altitude and climate is... The HIGHER the ALTITUDE, the COLDER the climate and the LOWER the ALTITUDE, the HOTTER the climate is.

Coming to latitude or ELEVATION is relatively lower in St. Louis, Missouri compared to Jakarta, Indonesia.

OCEAN CURRENTS: To simplify the ocean currents topic it is defined as the continuous movement of water from one place to another which are highly influenced by water temperature. St. Louis Missouri considered to be COLD CURRENTS ZONE where in case of Jakarta is WARM CURRENTS.

WIND PATTERNS: The wind pattern in St Louis, Missouri is WESTERLIES and the wind pattern in Jakarta, Indonesia is TRADE WINDS.

C. The major factor in these above mentioned factors is LAND/WATER CONTRAST. The reason here is water can absorb more energy from sun and this ability of absorbing heat and storing the heat, the other factor is water has higher capacity to take heat than compared to land.
