Question
State Avogadro's Hypothesis. Make sure to include any conditions that are necessary for the hypothesis to be true. b) At 1000 K and 10 atm, the density of gaseous nitrogen is 3.4 g/L and the density of an unknown gas is 2.5 g/L What is the mass of one mole of the unknown gas? State any assumptions and show your work. Mass = c) Consider the gas reaction data below: Reaction I: 2 L hydrogen + I L oxygen rightarrow 2 L Oxide A Reaction II: I L nitrogen + 2 L oxygen rightarrow I L Oxide B Does the above data, and qqIv the above data, show that hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen gases are diatomic (yes/no)? Do not use any personal knowledge of the elements involved.Explanation / Answer
1) Avogadro hypothesis states that the equal volume of gases at same Pressure and Temperature conditions will have same number of molecules of gas irrespective of mass of gas, chemical and physical properties of the gas
2) Density = Pressure * Mass/(R * T)
Since the pressure and temperature is same for both the gases, hence we can write
Density(O2 gas)/Density(unknown gas) = Mass(O2 gas)/Mass(unknown gas)
3.4/2.5 = 32/Mass of unknown gas
Mass of unknown = 32 * 2.5/3.4 = 23.52 gm/mol
3) The above data only shows that oxygen is diatomic gas
