Question
I'm doing an organic chemistry lab report on the synthesis and characterization of limonene extracted from an orange peel using fractional distillation.
My IR spectrum of the 'impure' before the limonene boiling point looks nearly identical to the IR of the 'pure' collected between 175-179 C. The first main peak, I think its the C-H stretch is at 75% transmittance whereas on the theoretical IR for limonene its nearly at 0%. Other than that the IRs seem to match pretty well to the theoretical. What conclusions can I draw from this? Any help would be appreciated!
Explanation / Answer
Dear friend,
dont belive theoretical IR, we have experimental IR in the below mentioned link
http://sdbs.db.aist.go.jp/sdbs/cgi-bin/direct_frame_top.cgi
we should have C-H stretching at around 2900 cm-1, and C=C stretching at 1500 cm-1, even IR is not reliable to check the purity of the sample, please check 1H NMR of the sample, it should have the appropiate peaks as given in above link. the proton attached to alkene should be downfielded when compare to other protons
