Question
You have discovered a new microbe that prefers to grow in the almost frozen waternear Antarctica (1 degree C). You extract from this organism a protein (called Protein A) that performs the following chemical reaction: sucrose (table sugar) + H_2O = glucose + fructose. Sucrose is a disaccharide and glucose and fructose are monosaccharides. You have 6 test tubes and you use them to perform an experiment. The table below shows the different things that were added to each of the 6 test tubes. What is a reasonable prediction as to how many glucose and fructose molecules will be produced in tube 6? 200,000 2,000,000 0 1,000,000Explanation / Answer
As microbe prefers to grow in the almost frozen water at 1oC. Hence may its protein will be destroyed at 25oC. . Too much heat can cause the rate of an enzyme catalyzed reaction to decrease because the enzyme or substrate becomes denatured and inactive.
There are two conditions exist for this microbe protein: If the enzyme becomes inactive at 25oC then the answer will become zero only.
Another condition is if the microbe protein is resistant to heat then the answer will become 200,000 only.
Increasing temperature will not affect on activation energy, using catalyst only we can decrease activation energy, therby change in rate of reaction.
They should clearly specify that protein -A is resistant to temperature upto 25oC. Time is 5 hours only and temperature is increased from 1oC to 25oC
Answer: 200,000
