Question
Hi! I have an assignment to change all the sentences in this paragraph from the passive voice to the active voice:
"In the preparation of the originally published paper a relevant theoretical paper was not discussed as it was missed in the literature survey. It is particularly interesting to compare these quantitative electron scattering calculations with the results in the original paper because it is possible to make deductions about the probability of electron attachment to HC in vibrationally excited states. The cross section is increased by vibrational excitation. The role of vibrational excitation could be tested in further experiments where the temperature of the sample is varied; significant temperature dependence of the negative ion signal would be expected where the dissociative electron attachment cross section is increased by vibrational excitation of the molecule. "
I changed all the sentences to the active voice:
"In the preparation of the originally published paper, I did not discuss a relevant theoretical paper as I missed it in the literature survey. I find it particularly interesting to compare these quantitative electron scattering calculations with the results in the original paper because making deductions about the probability of electron attachment to HC3N in vibrationally excited states is possible. Vibrational excitation increases the cross section. I could test the role of vibrational excitation in further experiments by varying the temperature of the sample; I would expect significant temperature dependence of the negative ion signal where vibrational excitation of the molecule increases the dissociative electron attachment cross section."
However, I have been informed that one of the sentences in the original paragraph must remain in the passive voice. Can someone help me identify which sentence must remain in the passive voice?
Explanation / Answer
The sentence "The cross section is increased by vibrational excitation." must remain in the passive voice. This sentence came twice - In the middle of the paragraph, and at the end of the paragraph.
Explanation: Vibrational excitation is a phenomenon, which can't be used as a subject. So, the particular sentence "The cross section is increased by vibrational excitation." must remain in the passive voice.
