Question

basalt: 38.7g Granite: 33.1g
I don't have the volume, but the lab professor said it was ok to try it out without actually having done this lab. I am just looking for help to see what I am doing wrong.

Explanation / Answer

in that case you do know the sample density because without that this cant be calculated and you didnt share in the uploded question so if you have the density you can use the following formula to determine the smaple volume :

that is : D= m/v

well for finding the density or volume we use water displacement method .

water displacement method-

1- find the mass of the sustance using the balance.record the mass

2- fill a graduated cylinder large enough to hold the insoluble, irregular solid with water to a measured level .record the colume of water.

3- submerge the solid in the graduated cylinder's water ,tap the cylinder gently to allow trapped air bubbles to escape .record the volume of water and submerged object.

4-subtract the volume of water from the volume water with the submerged object.

5-divide the initial mass measurement by the voule to determine the density of the object.
