Question
Review information about the “Midlatitude Grassland Biome” as found on pages 308 thru 310 of your textbook (e.g. McKnight Physical Geographic Landscape) and describe this biome by identifying:
-Where the biome is located in the world (latitude and area names)
-the types of fauna common to this region
-the types of flora common to this region
-how the latitudes of this biome impact its climate
- use any legal source on this biome to identify one threat to this biome (threats can be natural or unnatural) in nature. In your discussion, identify what this threat is (be sure to cite both resources you use), what is the primary source of this threat, and any solutions that has been attempted to mitigate this threat.
Explanation / Answer
Midlatitude Grassland is also known as the Temperate Grass land and these grass lands are located north of the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees North) and south of the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees South). The major temperate grasslands include the veldts of Africa, the pampas of South America, the steppes of Eurasia, and the plains of North America. These grasslands have a low density but high abundance of wildlife. The main types of fauna found here are, Grazers like bison, gazelles, zebras, rhinoceroses, and wild horses are common in the area Carnivores like lions, wolves and cheetahs and leopards are also found in midlatitude grasslands. Other animals of this region include: deer, prairie dogs, mice, jack rabbits, skunks, coyotes, snakes, fox, owls, badgers, blackbirds (both Old and NewWorld varieties), grasshoppers, meadowlarks, sparrows, quais, hawks and hyenas. The main type of flora which is common on these areas are grasses while trees and large shrubs are absent due to seasonal drought, occational fire, continuous grazing by large mammles. Among the trees cottonwood, willow and oak grow in the river vallys. A few hundred species of flower (mainly asters, blazing stars, coneflowers, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, psoraleas, and wild indigo) also grow among the grasses.
