Take a Stand: Controlling the Use of Fertilizers Background: To address the problem of what to do about nutrient run off, groups of researchers have proposed some form of government initiative to regulate the amount of fertilizers used by farmers and homeowners. Many groups have special interests in the proposal: City officials; concerned about cost and safety of water supply Environmentalists; concerned about the effect on ecosystems Tourism Industry (boating, fishing); concerned about the loss of income resulting from contamination of resources Farmers; concerned about calculating amounts of fertilizer needed, and the instability of the weather that causes run off, also their need to maximize crop yields . .

Explanation / Answer

My choice of role will be: Environmentalist The reason I choose this role is that being Environmentalist it would be more easy to defend yourself because you will take care of everyone whether it is city official or farmer or anyone else. This would be clear by my argument.

ARGUMENT: In current scenerio the whole world is fighting against the environmental pollution. In every global summit, the "ecosystem" is becoming the hot topic of discussion among the top leaders of the world. The unbalancing in the ecosystem is definitely a reason for worry because this is directly related with the existence of human kind on the planet Earth. And at the same time use of fertilezers is like calling the problem to our doorstep. Fertilizers have numerous adverse effect on our ecosystem. The indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers have hurt the nature badly and has caused the population of animals to decline rapidly. The pesticide and fertilizers have directly affected the land and water bodies. The fertilizers contains the chemicals which are non-degradable, they are going to persist in the ecosystem for long time. These chemicals have seen adverse effect on the aquatic life. These chemicals have also reduced the self-healing properties of the water bodies. So our tourism industry will suffer a lot. In fact, the effects of these fertilizers are far beyond our imagination. While people think of it as unhealthy, these actually have a long chain effect, passing death from one to another. Not only will these synthetic chemicals distribute over the surrounding, but they will also enter inside animals’ bodies; the residues are then stored into our bodies when we eat, allowing them to hamper out bodies from functioning normally and causing all kinds of human illness. The farmer who will use these fertilizers are more prone to the danger of health. Their crop will also suffer in long run as the fertilizers will boost the survival of the fittest among the pests and herbs as they will become resistant to this. So thats why I think fertilizers are going to hit the farmers aslo and that too very hard in both way income and health loss both. So if we will do the cost analysis then from every corner fertilizers are going to rob our pocket and health both.
