Question

Question 1 1 pts Compounds A and B each have two chiral centers a. They are I Select ] if the configuration of both chiral centers in A are the opposite configuration of the chiral centers in B. b. They are Identical if the configuration of both chiral centers in A are the same configuration as the chiral centers in B. if the configuration of one chiral center in A is the c. They are opposite configuration of a chiral center in B and the other chiral center has the same configuration in both compounds.

Explanation / Answer

Enantiomers are stereoisomers which have all chiral centers in opposite configurations relative to one another. Diastereomers are stereoisomers which have opposite configurations relative to one another at some but not all chiral centers. A special kind of diastereomer is an epimer in which the configuration of only one chiral center is opposite relatively while all other remain the same. Thus, between two compounds A and B -

i) if the configurations of both chiral centers is opposite to that in B they are enantiomers.

ii) if the configurations of both chiral centers in A are identical to that in B they are identical.

iii) if the configurations of only one chiral center in A is opposite to that in B, they are diastereomers (also epimers).
