Question

Now two more drops of titrant are added. Each drop neutralizes one H3O+ ion and adds another Na+ to the solution. The solution on the right hand side shows only 6 H3O+ions remain. There is still an excess of acid remaining so the solution would remain acidic, but as the [H3O+] decreases, the pH will increase. Because the analyte is a strong acid, the pH increases slowly.

How many more drops of titrant must be added to reach the equivalence point of the titration in figure 3? Answer with an integer, not a word.

_____ drops

Figure 3: Molecular View Of The Dropwise Addition of NaOH to HCI 9 initial H;0+ ions in the analyte 8 H,0+ ions left in the analyte Then add 1 drop of titrant Then add 2 more drops of titrant 6 H;0+ ions left in the analyte

Explanation / Answer

at equivalence point all H3O+ should be neutralize.

as per the qustion each drop of NaOH can neutralize on H3O+, it means for complete neutralization (i.e. for equivalence point) 6 more OH- would be required anf for that 6 drop of NaOH is required.

so for equivalence point of titration = 6 drops of titrant required.
