Question

Suppose the environmental lapse rate is 7 degree C per 1000 metres. If the air temperature at the surface is 17 degree C, what would be the air temperature measured by a radiosonde at 4000 metres above the surface? Suppose a parcel of dry air is lifted from the surface to an elevation of4000 metres. If the temperature inside the air parcel at the surface is 25 degree C, what would be the temperature of the air inside the parcel at 4000 metres if the rising air parcel remains unsaturated? Consider the temperature of the air at 4000 metres as measured by the radiosonde in (#10). Now consider the temperature of the rising air inside the parcel at 4000 metres in (#11). a) Is the air temperature inside the parcel at 4000 metres warmer or colder than the air surrounding it (as measured by the radiosonde)? b) In this situation would the atmosphere be considered stable or unstable? Suppose a parcel of unsaturated air is lifted from the surface to an elevation of 3000 metres. If the temperature inside the parcel at the surface is 12 degree C and the parcel became saturated at an elevation of 2000 metres, what would be the parcel temperature at 3000 metres? After a large snowstorm, the newspaper reports the water equivalent of the precipitation for Brandon, Manitoba to be 23 mm. If we assume all of the precipitation fell as snow, then how many cm of snow did the city receive?

Explanation / Answer

Answer- given - environmental lapse rate - 7 degree celcius per 1000m

air temperature at the surface = 17 degree

as well know on increasing elevation temperature decrease

elevation of radiosonde is 4000m so from surface upto 4000m temperature will be decrese by 28 degree celcius

so the temperature measured by the radiosonde at the height of 4000m will be = 17- (7*4) = -11 degree celcius

answer- temperature of dry air at surface = 25 degree celcius

dry air rises upto 4000m elevation

dry adiabatic lapse rate is 9.8 C/km

so the temperature of unsaturated air at the elevation 4000 m will be -14.2 degree celcius

answer- temperature inside the parcel of air at the elevation of 4000m measured by radiosonde will be cooler than surrounding air.

the atmosphere will be stable because prevailing lapse rate is lower than the dry adibatic lapse rate

answer- temperature of unsaturated air parcel at the surface is 12 degree celcius

dry adibatic lapse rate 9.8C/Km

now unsaturated air temperature at elevation 2000m will be -7.6 degree celcius

at the elevation of 2000m rises air become saturated and rise upto 3000m

moist lapse rate = 5 degree celcius per km

so the temperature of saturated air column at the elevation 3000 m will be -12.6 degree celcius
