Question

Prestige will influence obedience to authority. Take for example a teacher versus a principle of a school. A child, even if disobedient to their teacher, will often obey the principle or obey the teacher when threatened with being sent to the principle. They are both educators, but the principle is more prestigious. The appearance of authority will also Influence a person’s likelihood to obey. In Milgram’s Experiment a person was more likely to obey when the experimenter was in the room giving them orders. The likelihood of obedience dropped when the experimenter was not present but gave phoned in commands, or when the experimenter left. It has also been shown that the lab coat made people more likely to obey. This is because of the correlation between a lab coat and the idea of scientific prowess. Another factor that effects the likelihood of a person obeying is if the person believes that it will serve in the practice of science. If the person believes that through their endeavor some important scientific data will be gathered the person is much more likely to obey the commands that they are given. This is because as stated in the video, they believe in the cause that they are working for.   It is interesting to see that in the holocaust all of these factors were present. Adolf Hitler was perhaps one of the most authoritative figures in all of history. Germany at the time was one of the most Prestigious nations in the world. Finally, there were scientific experiments being done on those in the concentration camps.

Explanation / Answer

It is a fact that people pay attention and obey the persons who give them commands and orders and are ready to punish them when they are not being followed. It is the common mentality of people that they always show a feared face and tone when undertaking the orders or commands given by an elderly person. When it comes to the status, for example the principal and teacher, the student obeys the words of his teacher in classroom and in absence of the teacher when he has to deal directly with the principal,he slightly feels annoyed and helpless as he is the highest authority and can take any sort if decision against the student.

Adolf Hitler was a great dictator and a warrior. He believed in his own saying"if you want to become a great man,you shouldn't mind about the surrounding people and environment". The soldiers under him obeyed his orders and blasted the entire city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki because they had the thought they he was the head of all and had the rights to do anything at any time. This is the real mentality of human beings. All have same mindset that respect and fear depends on the status and power of the person.
