Question

Laboratory Questions ck on the laboratory bench. Lying beside the test tubes 1. Three test tubes, with no labels, are in a test tube ra are three labels: silver nitrate, AgNo, hydrochloric acid, HCl, and sodium carbonate, Na CO,. You are to place the labels on the test tubes using only the three solutions present. Here is your analysis procedure A portion of Test tube 1 added to a portion of Test tube 2 produces carbon dioxide gas, CO2. A portion of Test tube 1 added to a portion of Test tube 3 produces a white, silver carbonate precipitate. a. On the basis of your observations how would you label the three test tubes? 97

Explanation / Answer

the evolution of CO2 is gas is due to the reaction of Na2CO3 with HCl. The reaction is

Na2CO3+ 2HCl-------->2NaCl+ H2O+CO2

so tesr tube-1 must be either Na2CO3 or HCl or test tube-2 must be the other.

Test tube-1 reacts with test tube-3 to produce Silver carbonate. ( So Test tube-3 must be AgCO3, silver Carbonate). since Na2CO3(aq)+2AgNO3 (aq) --> 2NaNO3(aq)+Ag2CO3 (s)

Hence tube-1 must be Na2CO3, tube-2 must be HCl and tube-3 must be AgNO3.

when test tube-2 is added to test tube-3, AgNO3+ HCl -------->AgCl+ HNO3
