tHIS IS THE POST:
As mentioned in the book there are “two types of moral theories: those that claim that morality is relative and those that claim that morality is universal.” (Boss, 2017) Those who believe morality is relative consider people as the ones to create morality. On the other hand, Universalists think that universal principles hold for all people. In general moral theories are based on what is right or wrong. In my personal opinion I would say I’m more on the relative morality. The reason being is because I do like doing what is right and helping others whenever I can. The only downfall that I consider from being on the relative morality is that if I have to choose between myself and someone else I will majority of the time choose myself which would kind of make me a selfish person who only helps out when it’s in my favor or to my benefit. This necessarily isn’t the case all the time though, but it definitely is how I think if I have to choose between myself and someone else. Now if it’s just based on someone else without me being part of deciding then yes of course I will provide my help in whatever way I can attribute to helping others. A great factor on the universal morality is that it’s up to the person to decide on what’s right or wrong according to their way of thinking. Universal moralities are those who do what’s right based on the benefit that will be provided to others. Being considerate of others is a good trait to have because others will benefit since universals put others first before themselves. On the contrary if universal moralities think differently in some way then perhaps they will not consider having the same intentions which would mean that they wouldn’t want the best for others if they are selfish or just have different beliefs.
Explanation / Answer
First of all to choose between relative and univesal morality is itself a moral. In my opinion both are important but relative morality stand with good ; bad; right or wrong but in universal morality they don't exist because universal morality must be for all in same manner without seeing the person. However there is some drawbacks you are talking about in passage that relative morality makes us selfish; in my opinion it doesn't make us selfish but only make us choose between right and wrong for which we are not going to have any lose. In general relative moralities are much needed than universal morality.
