Question
14.68 The following is the proposed structure of a blue fabric dye, based on high-resolution mass spectrometry data. The reported method employed a pulsed laser to desorb dye molecules directly from a sample of dyed fabric. These molecules then entered a high- resolution mass spectrometer in negative ion mode (where anions are detected instead of cations). The resulting spectrum included the fol- lowing peaks and relative intensities: m/z = 423.0647 (100%) 424.0681 (22.5%), and 425.0605 (4.21%). Type here to searchExplanation / Answer
In nature S-32 isotope has natural abudance of 95.02 %
Where as S-34 isotopes has natural abundance of 4.21 %
Since the compound has sulfur it will give mass peak with sulfur isotope S-32 with relative abundance of 100 % and mass of compound with sulfur isotope S-34 with relative abundance 4.2 %
The above compound has nitrogen, in nature nitrogen has two isotopes with N-14 and N-15, therefore we have mass peak for compound having both isotopes of sulfur-34 and nitrogen-15
