Due to the fact our Earth spins, the Coriolis Effect gives weird responses to wind fields in pressure fields. By now you should be familiar with contour maps. In a previous homework, the contours were constant heights above sea level. Here the contours represent constant pressures (or isobars). The areas denoted by the Capital H represent High Pressure areas and the areas denoted by the capital L represent Low Pressure areas. If our Earth had no spin, the wind field from Albany, NY to Dallas, TX would be almost a straight line since high pressure always wants to flow directly to low pressure. This is not the case on our Earth. Read the section in Chapter 8 related to the Coriolis Effect to determine how winds would move.

For each of the following cities, fill in which direction the winds are blowing (ie. to the North, to the East, etc.) (9 pts).

Explanation / Answer

The coriolis effect influence the wind by deflecting it's path to the right in the northern hemisphere . but the sequence of normal and actual wind flow is to the southern hemisphere. it is taken from the satellite to understand the actuality. another thing is that it is true that the if there will no spin then the movement and flow of find will effected in such a way that it seem to be quite straight in order to maintain the condition of the pressure movement from high to low levels. so the wind would move towards the southern hemisphere if spin stop and by the effect of divergence due to coriolis effect of wind flow.

Direction of wind flow for each of the followinf cities as follow-

seattle, WA- the flow of wind will be to the east. it is because the fact of formation of sea breeze here. as the area is near the ocean and produce the sea breezing.

Bismarck,ND- here the wind flow is towards the southern west due to the formation of high pressure and low pressure zone around the Bismarck.

Albany, NY- the flow of wind will be towards the south due to high pressure region near NY which directed towards south low pressure zone.

Dallas, TX- the wind flow will be towards the north due to formation of low pressure zone to the northern side of the Dallas region.

As we know that the wind is always prefer to flow from the high pressure region to the low pressure region. in the above given map we can estimate that the low pressure region is on the left side of U.S. means in the west side and the high pressure zone is on the north east side, and this will make the follow of wind from the high to low pressure in such a way that the wind will be flow towards the south west to the entire wind system of united state.
