Question

Dilution is the addition of more solvent to produce a solution of reduced concentration. Most often a diluted solution is created from a small volume of a more concentrated stock solution. To make such a solution, a volumetric pipet is used to deliver an exact amount of the stock solution into a clean vol. flask, which is then diluted to volume. Moles of solutere diluton(Moles of solute) Moles of solute = M x V = mol/liter x liter This equation can be rewritten Problem2: Describe the preparation of 100 ml of 6.0 M HCI from a conc. Reagent that has a Density of 1.18 g/ml and is 37 % (w/w) HCl (36.5 g/mol). Solution Problem3: A student pipets exactly 5.00-ml of 3.47 x 102 M H2SO4 solution into a vol. flask and adds enough water to make 250 ml of solution. What is the concentration of the diluted solution? Solution:

Explanation / Answer

molarity of 37% HCl solution = 37/36.5 X1000/100

                                                   = 370/36.5

                                                   = 10.27

density is 1.18 hence molarity = 10.27X1.18 = 12.2 M

preparation of 100 mL of 6 M HCl is

                                                 M1V1 = M2V2

                                                  100X6 = 12.2XV2

                                                      V2 = 600/12.2

                                                      V2 = 600/12.2

                                                       V2 = 49.18 mL

To prepare 100 mL of 6 M HCl is dilute to 49.18 mL of 37% Hcl with 50.82 mL of water.

b) 5 mL of 3.47X10-2 diluted to 250 mL

                                                  M1V1 = M2V2

                                                  5X3.47X10-2 = M2X250

                                                      M2 = 5X3.47X10-2/250

                                                       M2 = 17.35X10-2/250

                                                        M2 = 0.694X10-3
