Galactose can be used by cells as an alternative to glucose to provide energy. Galactose shares a substantial part of the glycolytic pathway with glucose. Individuals with galactosaemia lack the activity of an enzyme called GALT (abbreviation for galactose phosphate uridyl transferase).
