Question

During class it was mentioned that some how research and policy do not seem to connect, particularly when it comes to the US guidelines on maternal leave after, childbirth. The policy (law) states that a job will secure your position with pay for a maximum of a 6 weeks. Any time over, must be at cost to the employee, i.e. no pay, vacation time off, etc. These polices are not only important for job security, that is, for a mother to return to a secure job, but there was much conversation about time to bond, male role in bonding, and how the end of maternal leave usually means the early introduction of the child into daycare. Given what we have learned attachment, write a letter to a 2-suggest a time for maternal leave to expire (or if you agree with the 6 weeks) and 3-speak of the impact of introducing a child to daycare at that expiration of maternal leave. When taking a position be sure you state theory. Try to keep this essay between 450-575 words. Cite source with page number.

Explanation / Answer

ESSAY A:

1. MATERNITY LEAVE: It is the period of time when a mother stops working when she is about to have or recently had a baby. Sometimes we hear other names like pregnancy leave, family leave or parental leave. Depending on the workplace mother can take her maternal leave if their company have official MATERNITY LEAVE POLICY. In some cases even if the workplace have leave policy it may not pay or fully pay and they grant the leave as PAID LEAVE.

Many developed countries do provide maternity leave benefits to the pregnant employees. But if one leave in the United States then the pregnant mother may not receive any guaranteed benefits from the government. In majority American women tops the list who receive no pay during their maternity period and instead they rely on FEDERAL PARENTAL LEAVE LAW to protect their job for few weeks after childbirth.

The other way to recover your entire pay or a small portion of your pay is SHORT-TERM DISABILITY(STD) which pay for few weeks because of medically related needs. While some states have mandated it to include in the employee benefits. INSURANCE PROVIDERS also give these benefits for a monthly premium.

2. SIX WEEKS is the standard amount of time covered for pregnancy. In some cases like cesarean delivery the six weeks time is not enough to recover and may require some more weeks. The maternal leave is not only applicable to birth mothers and the leave is also applicable to adoptive mothers and fathers. Since government is thinking to increase the weeks for maternity leave to 26 weeks and IN MY OPINION IT IS TOO MUCH and 6-12 weeks leave is enough. It should be made mandatory to provide six weeks of paid leave to all women equally and if they need more time then the company should consider them as unpaid leave.

3. The biggest benefit parents think about daycare is that it helps to socialize children. While many researchs stated that the children who spend long hours in daycare are weaker in many social adjustments and have negative moods. Spending time with parents in early age has significant impact on child's growth and can have positive interactions with mother. But if the children spend more time in daycare they experience WEAKER PARENTAL ATTACHMENT.

In one simple word THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW BABY CHANGES THE WORLD FOR PARENTS. The newborn family maternity leave can have significant positive effects on the health of young children. JOB SECURITY is the main reason why many parents feels that daycare is the only option available. Many lower income workers cannot afford to lose their jobs and go to work. The other negative impact of introducing a child to babycare is BREASTFEEDING. New born childs require breastfeeding atleast three times a day, if mother can go to work in the morning and have an option to come back in between lunch hours can help this impact. Because women are less likely to breastfeed infants as they have to return to work sooner after giving birth. So by considering all these, introducing a child to daycare after expiration of maternal leave have many negative impacts.
